Apart from the bathroom, your kitchen is probably the most important space in your home. It is essential to have a functional kitchen. But many kitchens are too small or cramped to be a good place for cooking and dining. Are you cooking in a cramped space in your kitchen? If so, it might be time for a kitchen remodeling project. It doesn't matter if you are unable to afford additional square footage. There are many remodels that you can do to make your kitchen efficient, without increasing its square footage. Below are 4 ways to make your kitchen more efficient.
1. Promote an open feeling
You can open up the space by removing an adjoining wall that separates your kitchen and dining room. If you don’t wish to tear down the entire wall you can remove a section. You can then use that space for a breakfast table that can double as a dining space and a place for food preparation. Another seating option is to use the backless stool that can be placed underneath the counter.
If a wall is not the right design choice, there are still ways to make your kitchen feel larger. Cupboards can make even a small kitchen seem smaller. You can replace top cupboards with open shelving to make your kitchen feel larger and provide storage for all your glassware. Repainting your kitchen in lighter colors can help make it feel more open.
2. Consider a different layout
You may consider completely changing the layout of your kitchen if you have no idea where you should start. This requires a more extensive renovation, but it can make your kitchen more functional. A galley-style layout is a great way to maximize space. You can have cabinetry and storage on either side and appliances on the other.
Your kitchen will feel bigger if there is a sense between the rooms. This is possible by matching the flooring of your kitchen with that in an adjoining room. The same effect can be achieved by sharing the same design or color scheme between rooms.
3. Take a look at your lighting
Lighting is critical in every room of your home. The same goes for your kitchen. A poorly lit kitchen can make it hard to cook in. Recessed lighting may be one option for saving space, but it's not your only option. For brightening up your counter space, consider using under cabinet lighting.
Flush mount lighting can be used to provide overhead lighting for low ceilings that don't allow for pendant lighting. This type is attached to the ceiling and leaves little or no space between the light fixture, the ceiling, and the light fixture.
4. Every inch of space should be used
This includes the vertical space of your kitchen. It also means that you can revamp your cabinets and drawers to make your kitchen more spacious. You have many options for maximizing this space. To make sure you have enough space, pull-out shelves can easily be placed in cabinets. Or wire racks can be used to double the size of your cupboards. Utilize vertical space to the fullest with stacked cabinets. Consider small cubbies or shelves for places like above your sink.
For larger pots or pans, hang a rack on the wall if you have limited cabinet space. To make your counter space more efficient, hang kitchen utensils or knives on the walls. The possibilities are endless with some planning and a little creativity, even in a small space. If you maximize the space and have a place for everything, your kitchen will be more pleasant to use. It will feel cozy and efficient, instead of cramped.
